About Diabetes
"Diabetes doesn't define you!"
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar (glucose), which is a key source of energy. It occurs when the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin, a hormone that helps glucose enter cells, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which can cause various health complications over time.
There are three main types of diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells, requiring insulin therapy.
Type 2 Diabetes: The most common type, often linked to lifestyle factors like obesity and inactivity, where the body becomes resistant to insulin.
Gestational Diabetes: Occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after childbirth, though it increases the risk of type 2 diabetes later.
Blood Sugar Monitoring
Regularly check blood glucose levels to stay within target ranges and adjust treatments accordingly.
Balanced Nutrition
Focus on a diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and vegetables while minimizing processed foods and sugars.
Physical Activity
Engage in regular exercise like walking, swimming, or strength training to improve insulin sensitivity and maintain a healthy weight.
Consistent Medication
Follow prescribed treatments, including insulin or oral medications, and attend regular check-ups to monitor progress.
